Philanthropy

National Mission Statement
To encourage our members to provide support to victims of domestic violence through auspices of agencies providing services to victims and to assist in the development and implementation of educational programs and hands-on activities designed to eliminate domestic violence.

Safeplace

Safeplace is a center for Battered Women, children, and men. They commit themselves to preventing rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence and breaking the cycle of violence in the Austin community. The offer a comprehensive and compassionate continuum of services, providing support and resources for survivors to create independent lives, free of violence, for themselves and their families. Their ultimate goal is to create a community that is full of peace and safety for all.

Nineteen yeas ago, in April 1987 the Walk began as the Walk for Safe Families, benefiting the Center for Battered Women (CBW). 235 people walked on the Town Lake Hike & Bike Trail raising $ 5,000 to support CBW. Each year, we participate in the walk by volunteering with set-up, registration, and actually walking the 2 1/2 mile walk with our mothers on Mom's Weekend.

We also hold an annual diaper drive for Hera Day - March 1st. This year we raised over 4500 diapers and tons of toys, clothes, toiletries, etcc for SafePlace.

Alpha Chi Omega also participates in activities in October for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We help to spread knowledge and information to the UT campus and Austin community about the prevention of domestic violence.

Each member is also required to complete another outside philanthropy project in which the girls are involved in all types of philanthropic events, such as feeding the homeless, and reading to children.

Burnt Orange Bowl

The members of Alpha Chi Omega and the Texas Wranglers are pleased to announce the 4th Annual Texas Wranglers-Alpha Chi Omega Flag Football Tournament, known as the Burnt Orange Bowl. The tournament is held over a two day period in the Fall semester. This joint venture, undertaken by two of the finest organizations at the University of Texas at Austin, will benefit SafePlace, a safe haven for women and children who are victims of rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence.

The Texas Wranglers and Alpha Chi Omega are dedicated to the Austin community, not only through assisting the monetary needs of SafePlace, but by establishing outreach programs such as the Burnt Orange Bowl to create awareness of the plight of domestic violence. The Burnt Orange Bowl will allow individuals across the University campus and the Austin community to participate in a fun-filled weekend and, at the same time, to partake in a wonderful charity for the greater community.

Burnt Orange Bowl is a flag football tournament consisting of brackets of 7-on-7 games played. Teams enjoy great food and great fun while competing to win awesome prizes and the chance to win raffle prizes. In past years, prizes have included: an iPod nano, Continental Airline tickets, restaurant gift cards, autographed UT gear and more! Burnt Orange Bowl is open to all UT students and Austin community members.
